Normally, I’m a stickler when it comes to translations and abridgments. I feel if a book is in a language you know, you should read it as written. And I will only read an abridgment if I’m convinced I’ll never read the original at all. But there are some rare cases in which the joy to be had by getting straight to the meat of the matter is so real that no niggling completism should be allowed to get in the way.
