When it comes to discussing race in America, people, and young people especially, can be aggressively stupid. The very phrase “race in America,” holds a hard kernel of stupidity at its core. There is but one thing different about race “in America” than anywhere else: only in America do we expect people of different races to live peaceably together at close quarters.
The whole reason Americans discuss questions of “black” and “white” is because, everywhere else, the hostile divisions are much more minute and specific. People of various white races slaughtered each other in Europe for centuries. So with various black races in Africa to this day, and so with the red Indian tribes of pre-Columbus America. It is only in a country formed centuries after the Christian promise of universal brotherhood that anyone could be so naïve as to spout a nonsense phrase like “diversity is our strength.”
So if we’re looking for wisdom on the subject, we have to turn to better thinkers than our own.
