The stories I enjoy most are strongly plotted interchanges between complex characters whose different worldviews and motivations come into conflict in deeply revealing ways. The major tragedies of Shakespeare are perfect examples, as are many of the great 19th century novels, and the very finest detective stories.
It's odd, then, that one of the movies I consider to be among the greatest of all time has an absurd plot, amorphous characters, and interchanges more mysteriously dream-like than revealing.
