Viewers of the humiliating spectacle we called a debate last week may have wondered how this country ever produced a James Madison or a Thomas Jefferson. But readers of history know it’s a rare thing for any country, in any generation, to produce men of wisdom and eloquence at the level of America’s greatest statesmen. We may not lead the world in every kind of literature, but no other nation can match us when it comes to works of political philosophy and rhetoric. From those rich archives, one short speech strikes me as particularly essential reading this 4th of July.
