It’s a movie that was once too sexually daring for conservatives; now it’s too traditional (and too riotously hilarious) for the grim radicals of the Left.
The so-called “Hays Code” outlined sensitive subjects to be carefully handled or outright avoided by any filmmaker who wanted endorsement from the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA). It was never law, and defying it didn’t mean your movie couldn't get made. But it did mean choking off your access to collaborators and distributors in the industry, a little like getting “no-platformed” today: you were free to speak, but your voice might be severely muffled.
