O great defender of the faith, keep us in touch with our God with our Christ with our humanity. Weave us words of wonderful meaning in this world of woe. We love you and your son.
I had often puzzled over whether “1984” or “Brave New World” was the more prescient novel. I had read 1984 when I was in high school, Brave New World somewhat later. I believe now, that culture being upstream from politics, that Brave New World is more the path we are following, but our culture is doing it to us without government coercion. We, or our “betters” are doing it for us, since the sexual revolution at least. This seems to be when it went mainstream. To be sure, I see both novels in the dramas unfolding around us, but BNW is our chosen path. And no one is allowed to read Shakespeare in college any more.
A second point is on embryonic stem cell research; adult pluripotent stem cells and the ability to harvest them ethically and essentially “convert” them into the equivalent of embryonic stem cells, makes that concern a bit less pressing, although Catholic Bioethics has continued to develop thought and teaching on the topic. The principle of cooperation with evildoers is one of the principles that we can consult. This came up particularly during the genesis of multiple vaccines using in some early stages of development of the vaccine, embryonic stem cells or research generated using these stem cells. I won’t bore you with the particulars, but it is an interesting and important concept to struggle through for proper moral foundation. The National Catholic Bioethics Center is a great source of information.
Knowing which end of the cart to place the horse (soul) helps with the making of the tech progress! To avoid the stagnation of the soul. As in the “brave new world”
For one is of God creatures (horse) and the other is more of a revealed temporal tool box (technology).
For by asking, seeking & knocking it is received (it was in a book I read )
The piece above would suggest that technology similar to manna from heaven , by that I mean , of having the same origins. The 2nd is adapted to us , The 1st we have to adapt to it at the moment , In away reflecting a human telos (which is the wrong way round) . As it is this back to front process that’s generally considered as nothing more than an entropic societal labour saving device like a can opener . This perspective reasoning, of the technological path atrophies the soul that you have been given in trust to nurture.
So it’s technology that is secondary to the soul , therefore understanding the soul will actually negate the necessity of adaptation to technology as the soul will develop the technology to which it is suited to itself only once the souls needs are properly understood .
Would Walden ever be written today? Nowadays we would watch the pond from a big screen TV or from a telephone with Substack. I'm certainly guilty of it. Can we know our humanness without using our real senses? We're trying.
The new song, The song of Redeeming love- has been, is, and forever will be
the song that says: Without him,
We are but dust. With him, we are everything.
Oh my, dear Lord help us!

What you might call REAL gain of function
