My husband and I spent the first 18 months of our marriage in a small town in Germany. He was stationed at a small army base. We lived in an attic apartment above our landlord who had fought in WW1. Then he served in the Home Guard during WW2. So, now it was 1975, and he was in his 70s, but he was so kind to us. He was proud to have American tenants. Most all the people of that town, and in other places we traveled to, were friendly to the Americans who were still, after 30 years, a visible presence and reminder of the war. I never thought of them as the enemy, but I was born almost a decade after the war ended.
So true! The foundation of faith and virtue lies on right orientation within the human soul. When we orient and move correctly, spiritually speaking, towards the Way, the Truth, and the Life, we flourish, glorify, and rejoice. Then we make a heaven of hell. Done correctly, habitually, and permanently, and I believe even a place as brutal and evil as a labor camp can be transformed, to the one holy and strong enough to endure it with grace. The answer to Auschwitz, and every other evil, is sanctity.
Why didn’t you say you were in the Schwarzwald? I’d have popped over to say “hi”. Freiburg is beautiful. Did you go up the rather wobbly panorama tower? And did you pay the extra 2 quid to see the artworks in the church? Definitely worth the money. I could have given you a hundred different recommendations if you’d said. Never mind. Give us a shout next time you’re over.
Welcome home. I hope you were able to take a complete break and recharge.

I maintain that Werewolf Cop is still my favorite Klavan novel.
Meet and right indeed
